Bulawayo City 2-1 Biya and Friends (Lucky Dube 28’, 88’) (Francis Ndlovu 60’)
Bulawayo City Football Club developmental side lifted the inaugural ZIFA Bulawayo Province Cup with a brace from Lucky Dube, to overcome Biya and Friends in an entertaining match which was watched by a good crowd.
The cup which was contested for by 32 teams, 16 from each of the Division 2 and 3 leagues in the Bulawayo province saw the slippery Dube head home a Manners Mangumba long free kick, taken on the right flank as City took a 1-0 lead at half time.
Biya and Friends dominated the opening minutes of the second half and substitute Francis Ndlovu capitalised on a defensive mix up to slot it into the nets after 15 minutes, as Biya and Friends fans who seemed to outnumber city spilled onto the pitch in celebration.
They could have added a second goal soon after, when outstanding right back Munashe Mawendapi flighted a good cross which was met by Bhekinkosi Siziba with a brilliant diving header while on the run but was stopped by Ronald Zenga, the City goalkeeper.
Before that City had a Blessing Munkuli header going wide after a beautiful move that saw their Captain Elshmar Farasi intelligently spread the ball to the right and an overlapping Mangumba bring in a good cross which was met by the well positioned Munkuli.
With the match headed for extra time Dube had other ideas meeting another cross into the box with a lovely header, with the match just two minutes from the 90 minutes and it was game over.
Innocent Mapuranga, Bulawayo City, “We are happy to lift the cup, our defence was the pillar but credit goes to our striker Lucky for the two goals, most of the boys are U20 and winning trophies when they are young it motivates them to play for the big clubs, this was different from the league as they played with a sweeper so as not to concede goals but we managed to get the two goals”.
Goodson Gama, Biya and Friends, “ The boys put up a brave team but the better team lost on the day, we stuck to our game plan despite going down, I felt the free kick they scored from was not a free kick and the second one it was from an offside position, feeling for my boys but we just have to lift them up and this match confirms the talent that is there in our developmental leagues and if Peter played in the Premier League at the age of 15, we can have more boys coming through”.
